[...] Looney’s BBQ, Berkeley - (Original Review) One of the first joints we reviewed here, Looney’s seems to have improved somewhat over the last months. I had a brisket sandwich that was probably as good as any I’ve had in the Bay Area. The beef was well smoked, great beef flavor, and not too fatty, which is a rarity for brisket around here. Andrew had pulled pork, which though it was more chopped than pulled, was moist and flavorful. And, of course, the hush puppies were still bad ass. Our last review left you with the impression that you should only go there if you wanted to watch a game or have a beer and a hush puppy, but I think we can revise upward and suggest that lunch is pretty freakin’ good there too.
I don't know you guys. The beer used to be good - that is the only redeeming quality.

The food is different every time i eat there and almost every time it is crap. We come there with a group because we work near by and sometimes you just need variety, but without exception every time we are there we get harassed - and yes i mean harassed by the owner. Who is NOT from texas he is from LA and keeps bragging about his food and that everybody loves it. This guy WOULD NOT SHUT UP ABOUT HIS CRAPPY FOOD.

Anyway to sum up: The meat is too fatty, the sauces are different every time, the baby back ribs are burnt, the appetizers are over-fried, the beef ribs come out undercooked (ive seen this twice) and the service is lousy at best.

We need a good local BBQ place that just gets it right. Though that tv really hits the spot.

I've always liked the Grease Stain Rating system at HollyEats.com. To swindle a line from that NYTimes article you guys linked to, maybe you should rate on a system of Pappy Slaps.

(Judd, I am reading over your shoulder). Agreed on the hush puppies. I think I asked where the owner came from when I was there and the claim was that he was a native-born Texan, but that seems pretty doubtful given the quality of the meat.
